Residents in Midvaal have been told to remain vigilant as authorities continue searching for a lion reportedly spotted in the Redan area near Meyerton early on Wednesday morning.
The animal had still not been located by Thursday, according to local publication Vaalweekblad.
Community Policing Midvaal warned residents to avoid isolated areas and keep children and pets safe.
The lion was reportedly first spotted by security guard Ithumeleng Mobadi at about 3.50am on Wednesday while he was patrolling the area.
Police were subsequently involved in the search, with thermal-imaging drone technology reportedly deployed to help locate the animal.
Residents were advised to avoid unnecessary movement in areas where the lion could be roaming, particularly when walking, jogging or cycling.
Emfuleni Local Municipality official Richard Chaka, who has worked in the municipality’s communications department and mayor’s office, also issued a public warning, urging residents not to approach the animal.
“Parents are encouraged to keep children close and ensure that pets and livestock are safely secured,” Chaka said.
“Under no circumstances should anyone attempt to approach, chase, corner, or capture the animal.”
Chaka warned that even a lion appearing calm could become dangerous if frightened, threatened or cornered.
“Please leave the search and capture operation to trained professionals,” he said.
He also cautioned residents against attempting to photograph or film the animal for social media.
“No photograph, video, or moment of curiosity is worth putting your life or the lives of others at risk,” he said.
“If you spot the animal, do not approach it. Move to a safe location, alert the relevant authorities, and provide them with accurate information about the sighting, including the location, if it is safe to do so.”
Meanwhile, Bloufontein Wildlife Park in Meyerton has denied speculation that the lion escaped from its facility.
“We would like to confirm that the male lion seen is NOT a lion belonging to Bloufontein Wildlife Park,” the park said in a statement carried by Vaal Journal.
“There are no missing lions or other animals from our facility.”
Reports have differed on whether the animal is male or female.
