The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says the City of Tshwane is “one shock away” from being unable to pay its workers, citing the metro’s weak liquidity, water and electricity losses, irregular expenditure and deteriorating infrastructure.

Speaking at the party’s 2026 local government election manifesto launch at Bana Sports Ground in Mabopane on Saturday, EFF Treasurer-General Omphile Maotwe criticised ActionSA mayor Nasiphi Moya and accused her of personal spending despite the state of the city.

“At the end of June 2026, Tshwane had only R1.6 billion in cash. This capital city, the seat of our national government, is one shock away from being unable to pay its own workers,” Maotwe said.

“But we’re not surprised by this because the ActionSA mayor is busy with the construction of her own swimming pool, allegedly using money from service providers doing business with the city, the same way we saw former

Subscribe to read the full article.

The post EFF says Tshwane is one shock away from failing to pay workers appeared first on Inside Metros.

The Umkhonto Wesizwe Party (MKP) has announced mayoral candidates for six of the country’s eight metros, saying the remaining two candidates for Tshwane and Cape Town would be announced at a later stage.

The announcement was made in Durban on Friday by the party’s Secretary-General, Sibonelo Nomvalo, following a two-day meeting of the national leadership.

He said the candidates were carefully chosen and none of the candidates have a criminal record against them.

ALSO READ: Gift of the Givers heads to Nepal as six South Africans remain missing

“Regarding the criteria that we have used to appoint these members, we have been meticulous, and we have used scientific criteria which is based on their profiles and which is based on their historical contribution and credentials in the revolution. We are going to publicise all their profiles… All of them here qualify for this job, all of them have got their own good histories respectively, and we will share it with you. None of them has a criminal record,” he said.

In the City of Johannesburg, the party announced Bongani Baloyi, who once served as the mayor of Midvaal under the DA and later defected to the MKP when he closed down Xiluva, the party he formed after leaving ActionSA in March 2023.

In the City of Ekurhuleni, the party named Thulani Shongwe, who is currently serving as a member of the National Assembly (MP) in Cape Town and who shot to prominence during his input in the ad hoc committee probing the allegations that were made by Lt General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi that the justice system has been infiltrated by criminal elements.

Contrary to expectations, in eThekwini, the party named little-known Zandile Hlophe-Mkhwanazi as its mayoral candidate. It was widely expected that the party was going to name either Zandile Gumede or Philani PG Mavundla as mayoral candidates.

Hlophe-Mkhwanazi will be up against Hanniff Hoosen from the DA, Zwakele Mncwango from ActionSA and Thabani Nyawose from the ANC, the likely candidate that would be announced by the ANC when it finally unveils its candidates for metros and big towns.

In Mangaung, the party named Mapaseka Mothibi as its mayoral candidate, while in the Buffalo City in the Eastern Cape, the face of the party is Mzwandile Vaaiboom. In the Nelson Mandela Bay metro, which is also in the Eastern Cape, the MKP named Mvuleni Map as its mayoral candidate.

Nomvalo said the endorsement of these candidates marks an important step towards consolidating the party’s electoral campaign and providing voters with clear leadership choices ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.

“As the uMkhonto weSizwe Party, we will organise. We will mobilise. We will listen to our people. We will take the People’s Mandate to the masses. No one must be left behind,” he added.

Meanwhile, Nomvalo said Dr Khanyisile Litchfield-Tshabalala and Pumlani Kubukeli, the two MPs of the party who were expelled yesterday, did not undergo any disciplinary hearing because the constitution of the party gives its leader, Jacob Zuma to appoint members to positions and fire them when he deems it necessary.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane has tabled a motion of no confidence against the city’s Council Speaker Mncedi Ndzwanana, saying that he should be removed from office after the high court found that he acted unlawfully by deducting 13 votes during a council sitting.

The motion, submitted on Thursday, follows a recent high court judgment which ruled that Ndzwanana unlawfully reduced the recorded vote during a council meeting, a decision that resulted in the suspension of City Manager Johann Mettler. The court later set aside the suspension.

The DA in Tshwane has approached the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria to set aside the sanction imposed on ANC deputy mayor and finance MMC Eugene Modise, saying that docking two months’ salary over undeclared business interests is too lenient.

Speaking to the media outside court on Tuesday, former Tshwane mayor and DA mayoral candidate Cilliers Brink said the penalty amounted to a slap on the wrist and would weaken accountability in the municipality if allowed to stand.

“We believe that the Speaker misdirected the council [and] misinformed the council of the penalties available against Modise. But further than that, we believe that R200,000 — the docking of two months’ pay — is irrational in light of the fact that Modise’s company continues to benefit to the tune of R3 million per month,” he

Subscribe to read the full article.

The post DA asks court to set aside Modise’s ‘slap on the wrist’ salary fine over undeclared interests appeared first on Inside Metros.

Tshwane Mayor Dr. Nasiphi Moya has raised alarm over the city’s annual expenditure of R30 million on salaries for suspended officials, most of whom are senior managers.

“One of the concerns that we have was the amount of money that we pay for people who are sitting at home,” Moya said.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Tshwane has warned that the metro could face an “inevitable” cash-flow crisis within the next 12 months unless urgent steps are taken to stabilise its finances.

The party’s leadership in the capital, led by its mayoral candidate for next year’s local government elections, Cilliers Brink, proposed measures it said would prevent the city from sliding into a position where it was forced to draw on pension funds to cover operating costs.

“The expenses incurred by the city is much higher than the realistic collection of income, and this is a result of bad policy and bad government. Tshwane has been in an acute financial crisis since the city has been placed illegally under administration for a prolonged period of time in 2020,” said DA Tshwane spokesperson for utilities, Jacqui Uys.

“The city now faces a deficit of between R4 billion and R6

Subscribe to read the full article.

The post Tshwane budget questioned as city risks cash crunch appeared first on Inside Metros.

The City of Tshwane said that an increase in typhoid cases was consistent with a seasonal pattern seen during warmer months and that there was “no cause for alarm”.

The statement comes after 24 typhoid cases were reported in Hammanskraal and Bronkhorstspruit last week.

The patients, under 15 years of age, were admitted to Hammanskraal’s Jubilee Hospital.

Senior nursing manager at the hospital, Julia Aphane, said that upon arrival at the facility, the children had symptoms that included diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and dehydration.

Aphane said the symptoms were the same as those experienced by residents during the 2023 cholera outbreak in the area.

Tshwane acting executive mayor Eugene Modise said the seasonal increase in cases was not unusual.

He said that since 1 January to 31 October, a total of 48 laboratory-confirmed cases of typhoid had been reported across the Tshwane District.

“Most of these

Subscribe to read the full article.

The post Tshwane says typhoid cases are seasonal, ‘no cause for alarm’ appeared first on Inside Metros.
