A man has appeared in court in connection with a deadly gas explosion at Zodwa Special School in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, last Wednesday which killed two of his former colleagues and injured three.
Moloko Ramogwadi (34), appeared in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on Monday, facing two charges of murder and three of attempted murder and the case was postponed to Friday.
The Gauteng NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said Ramogwadi was arrested a day after the explosion which took place on a Wednesday after he had been fired on a Tuesday by the company that had hired him to build classrooms.
“Ramogwadi was hired by a company to build extra classrooms at Zodwa Special School. However, on August 22 (Tuesday), he was fired from the company,” Mahanjana said.
It is alleged that a day after he was fired, Ramogwadi came to the construction site. When his former co-workers asked what he was doing at the site, Ramogwadi allegedly said he had come to collect his tools.
“It is further alleged that Ramogwadi proceeded to open gas tanks, while the other workers were still on-site and a fire broke out. Two workers died on the scene, and three others were taken to hospital,” said Mahanjana.
