Five suspected poachers were killed in a shootout with police and Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife officers near the Hluhluwe iMfolozi Park on Saturday.
Ezemvelo said on Sunday that the joint operation took place almost two kilometres from the park’s Memorial Gate on the R22/P453 road from Hluhluwe town.
The suspected poachers were travelling in a Hyundai i20 and an Isuzu bakkie when the shootout took place.
According to KZN SAPS spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda: “A stop A stop and search operation was set up along the same road, and when the suspects arrived at the roadblock, a shootout ensued between police and the suspects.
“Five suspects were shot and fatally wounded. They were found in possession of a hunting rifle with a silencer and two pistols. No police officer was injured during the shootout.”
Among those killed were three Mozambicans and two South Africans, Ezemvelo said.
