Hantam Municipality mayor Koos Alexander on Monday handed over 25 newly completed houses to beneficiaries at the Calvinia 200 Housing Project in the Northern Cape, bringing the project to 151 completed homes, or 75% of its target.

The remaining 49 houses are at various stages of construction and are expected to be completed and handed over by the end of September 2026.

The Northern Cape Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA) said the handover, conducted alongside MEC Bentley Vass, forms part of the provincial government’s R1 billion housing programme aimed at reducing the housing backlog across the province.

The Calvinia development is one of several projects under the province’s flagship housing programme launched two years ago to accelerate the delivery of subsidised housing.

According to the department, beneficiaries were selected from municipal housing demand databases, with priority given to vulnerable groups, including older persons, people with disabilities, military veterans, child-headed households and other qualifying applicants.

The programme is also intended to create employment opportunities while expanding access to secure home ownership.

“This week, as announced at the beginning of July, we are continuing the handover of completed houses across the province in honour of Nelson Mandela Month,” Vass said.

He said the department plans to hand over 108 completed houses across the Northern Cape’s five districts during July, symbolically marking the 108 years associated with former president Nelson Mandela’s legacy.

As part of the handover, Vass also planted trees at the newly completed homes as part of a greening and beautification campaign aimed at creating sustainable and environmentally friendly communities.

The latest handover marks another phase in the Calvinia housing project and forms part of the provincial government’s efforts to accelerate housing delivery and improve living conditions for residents.
