The provincial commission said it was pleased with voter turnout during the 2026 Local Government Elections, with 45.83% of registered voters casting their ballots.
“Of the approximately 1.5 million registered voters in the province, 45.83% exercised their democratic right by casting their ballots yesterday,” the IEC said.
“The Commission extends its appreciation to all Free State voters who participated in the elections and contributed to the continued strengthening of South Africa’s democracy.”
The IEC said the results process was progressing steadily, with six municipalities having completed the capturing of results. These are Letsemeng, Kopanong, Mohokare, Masilonyana, Tokologo and Phumelela local municipalities.
Results from the remaining 13 municipalities were still being captured.
“While the counting of ballots has been concluded, electoral staff are working to ensure that all results are accurately captured, verified and processed in accordance with the Commission’s prescribed procedures,” the Commission said.
“The Electoral Commission remains committed to ensuring that the results process is conducted with the highest levels of accuracy, transparency and integrity.”
The IEC said it would continue to provide updates as the processing and finalisation of results progressed.
It also thanked electoral officials, political parties, candidates, security agencies, observers and other stakeholders for their cooperation and contribution to the successful conduct of the 2026 Local Government Elections in the Free State.
