Cape Town has been named the best city in the world for 2025 by Time Out, earning the top spot after finishing second to New York last year.

This accolade reflects the resilience and determination of the city’s people, according to Noko Masipa, DA Western Cape Spokesperson on Agriculture, Economic Development, and Tourism.

Time Out, a globally renowned magazine celebrating urban life, culture, and cuisine, praised Cape Town for its breathtaking beauty, rich cultural heritage, and unique experiences.

Highlights include African penguins on pristine beaches, world-class wine tastings, and the iconic views from Table Mountain.

“This recognition underscores the success of the DA-led Western Cape’s commitment to promoting tourism and driving economic growth,” said Masipa.

“Tourism is a cornerstone of our economy, creating jobs and attracting investment across industries. Awards like this enhance Cape Town’s global reputation and reaffirm its status as a top destination.”

According to Time Out, Cape Town scored highly for its natural beauty, overall happiness, and exceptional food scene.

Notably, 97% of respondents reported that the city made them happy—a testament to its unique charm.

From shopping at the V&A Waterfront to cultural adventures in East City and Kalk Bay, Cape Town offers diverse attractions reflecting its vibrant spirit.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis celebrated the achievement, emphasizing that the recognition reflects the pride and positivity of Cape Town residents.

“All our work is aimed at making Cape Town the best city in the world to live in—a place where people can build meaningful lives and feel a real sense of ownership of their city. We’re proud this sentiment came through so strongly,” he said.

The annual ranking, based on input from over 18,500 residents worldwide, evaluated 44 criteria, including food, nightlife, cultural offerings, affordability, and overall vibe. Cape Town excelled across the board, climbing to the top spot this year.

Andrew Hallett, Time Out South Africa’s content director, highlighted the blend of natural and urban attractions that make Cape Town a standout.

“From Table Mountain and the Cape Winelands to vibrant nightlife and diverse culinary delights, Cape Town offers unforgettable experiences. Being named Best City in the World is a huge high five to Capetonians who work tirelessly to make this city exceptional,” he said.

As the world takes note of Cape Town’s unmatched appeal, Masipa extended an open invitation:

“We celebrate this achievement and invite the world to discover why Cape Town is not just the best city for 2025 but a destination that will leave a lasting impression.”
