December in South Africa is unlike anywhere else in the world. While the Northern Hemisphere braces for snow and wine toasts, South Africans step into what they have renamed the Dezemba mode, a unique blend of summer holidays, Christmas cheer, and year-end relaxation.

Across the country, families, friends, and communities mark the season with traditions that are distinctly local and joyfully vibrant.

For many, the braai is the beating heart of the festive season. Instead of roast turkeys, South Africans gather around the fire, grilling boerewors, sosaties, and marinated steaks.

The scent of smoky meat fills backyards, beaches, and parks, turning Christmas Day into a celebration of food and fellowship.

Travel also defines the season. Highways buzz with families heading to coastal towns, rural homesteads, or bushveld retreats.

The “Great Trek” to the coast is a ritual in itself, as South Africans swap city skylines for sandy beaches and ocean breezes.

Carols by Candlelight remain a cherished tradition, bringing communities together under the stars.

Remember, in South Africa, festive tables are laden with “seven colours,” a rainbow of dishes from roast chicken to malva pudding, koeksisters, and biltong.

But beyond the food and travel, the season is about family and Ubuntu. Whether it’s opening presents under the tree, sharing mince pies, or simply reconnecting after a long year, South Africans treasure the chance to slow down and be with loved ones.

At the same time, many are choosing to give back. Charities and foundations encourage people to make their celebrations meaningful by supporting communities in need, reminding us that festive joy is best when shared.

So, as the country lights up with laughter, braais, and beach days, we turn the question to you: What are you doing this festive season?

Are you firing up the grill, hitting the road, or staying home with family?

Tell us how you’re celebrating, because in South Africa, every festive story adds to the chorus of summer, sunshine, and togetherness.
