More than 300 title deeds were handed over to qualifying beneficiaries in Regorogile Extension 8, Thabazimbi, on Tuesday as part of the government’s efforts to restore property ownership and secure tenure.

Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane, Limpopo MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs Pule Shayi and Thabazimbi Local Municipality leaders handed over the title deeds during a door-to-door programme on Tuesday.

Among the beneficiaries were Anna Semoki Mafafo, 79, a person with a disability, Christina Maboke, 70, and Gabakangwe Zigambo, 79.

The handover forms part of the department’s Title Deeds Restoration Programme, which aims to register more than 80,000 title deeds nationally by 2030.

According to the project profile, 500 houses were built in the area.

Of these, 311 title deeds had been registered and were ready for handover, while 129 properties were still undergoing conveyancing and 60 beneficiaries were awaiting verification.

The minister and MEC were joined by the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Human Settlements, AM Seabi, the chairperson of Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Financial Management and the Select Committee on Finance, Sanny Ndhlovu, and Thabazimbi mayor Andries Tshukudu, among other officials and stakeholders.

Simelane urged beneficiaries not to sell their Breaking New Ground (BNG), formerly known as Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP), houses.

She said the department had set a target of registering 80,000 title deeds under the 2024-2029 Medium-Term Development Plan.

“The programme was aimed at restoring people’s dignity and security of tenure. The title deed was an important document that guaranteed ownership and had the potential to unlock asset value, as beneficiaries could use it to improve their socio-economic status,” Simelane said.
