ON ECONOMIC GROWTH
Ramaphosa acknowledged the fact that the South African economy has not grown in the past decade, adding that the recovery of the economy has stalled as persistent shortages have disrupted business and SOEs like SAA, Prasa, Denel, Transnet and Eskom continue to be in distress.
ON ENERGY, ESKOM AND THE POWER CRISIS
Ramaphosa said load-shedding is the inevitable consequence of Eskom’s inability over many years – due to debt, lack of capacity and state capture – to service its power plants. “We are taking the following measures to rapidly and significantly increase generation capacity outside of Eskom,” he said.
ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF SOVEREIGN WEALTH FUND
Ramaphosa said the establishment a sovereign wealth fund will ensure that many people participate in the economy and share in the country’s wealth.
