Seven men were arrested in Klerksdorp on Tuesday following a tip-off that a plot had been hatched to bomb an ATM in the town’s CBD.

Hawks spokesperson Katlego Mogale said members of the Special Task Force (STF), the Hawks’ Tactical Operations Management Section (TOMS), and other law enforcement units acted on intelligence about the planned attack, which led to the arrests.
The suspects – aged between 30 and 58 — were apprehended early in the morning.
During the operation, police recovered a rifle, pistol, and explosives believed to have been intended for the bombing. Investigators also seized a suspected stolen motor vehicle linked to the group.

The suspects are expected to face multiple charges, including possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, conspiracy to commit a crime, and possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.
They will appear in the Klerksdorp Magistrates’ Court.
Authorities have praised the swift action of the STF and Hawks, noting that the arrests prevented what could have been a dangerous and destructive incident in the busy CBD.
