The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has entered into a Service Level Agreement (SLA) with the Gauteng Provincial Department of Roads and Transport (GPDRT) to rebuild, upgrade, and maintain traffic signals across various intersections managed by the Gauteng Province.

The collaboration aims to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance road safety by ensuring consistent signal functionality.

Currently overseeing 2,023 signalized intersections, the JRA will integrate an additional 275 intersections managed by Gauteng Province.

Due to resource constraints, initial efforts will prioritize upgrades and maintenance on critical economic and major routes, supporting Johannesburg’s key economic hubs.

Key roads include Winnie Mandela Drive, Beyers Naudé Drive, Allandale Road, Malibongwe Drive, Grayston Drive, Witkoppen Road, Golden Highway, Kliprivier Drive, Hendrik Potgieter Drive, Ontdekkers Road, Heidelberg Road, Soweto Highway, and Chris Hani Road.

These enhancements will not only improve safety and security but also incorporate advanced technologies to optimise traffic flow within Johannesburg.

Zweli Nyathi, CEO of JRA, praised the agreement, calling it a significant milestone that consolidates traffic light management under JRA.

“This is a significant milestone following extensive discussions between the two entities. Consolidating all traffic lights in Johannesburg under the JRA’s management will streamline repairs, replacements, and maintenance efforts, ensuring the continued safe and efficient operation of designated traffic signals.”

Nyathi further emphasized that the collaboration between the JRA and GPDRT will benefit all road users, particularly in high-traffic areas.

“Many of these intersections provide access to the City’s M1 and M2 Motorways and National freeways. It is essential to minimize traffic disruptions and inconveniences to road users, thereby promoting smoother mobility throughout the city,” he said.

Dr. Thulani Mdadane, Gauteng Head of Department for Roads and Transport, emphasized the agreement’s importance in restoring and improving traffic light services across the city.

“As part of the agreement, the Johannesburg Roads Agency will be tasked with, amongst others, pole painting; reflector cleaning and globe replacement; repairs to traffic lights and related equipment; repairs to cabling; repairs to signal heads and poles as well as fuse replacement,” said Mdadane.
