Municipal by-elections are scheduled across four South African provinces of Gauteng, Eastern Cape, Kwazulu-Natal, and Limpopo on April 2, 2025.
These elections will see 29 candidates from 16 political parties vying for vacant seats.
In the City of Johannesburg Municipality, Ward 82 became vacant following the passing of the incumbent councillor, prompting a contest among multiple political parties including the African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA), and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), among others.
Ward 99 in the City of Johannesburg will be contested solely by the ANC and DA due to similar circumstances.
The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) announced voter registration for these by-elections in February, with voting stations open from 08:00 to 17:00 on the election day.
In the Eastern Cape, Intsika Yethu Municipality’s Ward 13 will see competition from the ANC, EFF, and two other parties following the councillor’s passing. Meanwhile, Uphongolo Municipality’s Ward 12 will be contested by the IFP, ANC, EFF, and two other parties under similar circumstances.
In KwaZulu-Natal’s KwaDukuza Municipality (KZN262), Ward 28 candidates include Mzukisi Mabengu (IFP), Lucia New Mlondo (ANC), Gibson Sikhosiphi Mbuthu (EFF), and Vishnugopal Govender (MK).
In Limpopo, Ward 09 of Makhado Municipality will be contested by Khumbudzo Mazzini (ANC), Maria Alida Wentzel (DA), Fhatuwani Mugwena (African People’s Convention – APC), and Ranideshvari Agambaram (MK) following the councilor’s passing.
