SIU hails arrest of alleged Tembisa Hospital syndicate kingpin Govindraju

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) on Tuesday welcomed the arrest of Stefan Joel Govindraju, an alleged Tembisa Hospital procurement syndicate kingpin whose network allegedly siphoned about R600 million from the Gauteng facility through more than 1,200 contracts.

Govindraju appeared in the Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court — sitting at Palm Ridge — on Monday on 70 counts, including fraud, theft, money laundering and corruption-related offences linked to the procurement of medical supplies and equipment at the hospital. He was released on R200 000 bail.

The SIU said Govindraju was linked to one of three main alleged procurement syndicates operating at the hospital. His network, previously referred to as “Syndicate X”, had allegedly siphoned approximately R600 million from the hospital.

The unit referred evidence of alleged criminal conduct involving Govindraju and Tembisa Hospital officials to the National Prosecuting Authority in April 2025.
